How to Apply DTF Transfers

DTF (Direct to Film) transfers are easy to apply at home or in your shop with a heat press. Follow these steps for the best results every time.

What You'll Need

Heat press. Household iron will not work.
Your DTF transfer
Clean, pre-washed garment or fabric
Parchment paper or Teflon sheet (recommended)

Step-by-Step Application Instructions

Step 1 — Pre-Press Your Garment

Pre-press your garment for 3–5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles. This helps the transfer adhere evenly.

Step 2 — Position Your Transfer

Place the DTF transfer on the garment in your desired location.

Step 3 — Apply Heat

Temperature: 325°F (149–160°C)
Time: 15 seconds
Pressure: Heavy pressure

Step 4 — Peel

Allow the transfer to cool completely then peel the film slowly and evenly from one corner. For best results wait until the transfer is fully cool before peeling.

Step 5 — Final Press (Optional but Recommended)

Place parchment paper over the design and press again for 5–10 seconds to seal the edges and improve durability.

Recommended Heat Settings by Fabric Type

Washing & Care Instructions

Wait 24 hours after application before washing.
Turn garment inside out before washing.
Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle.
Do not bleach.
Tumble dry on low heat or hang to dry.
Do not iron directly on the transfer — always use a pressing cloth or parchment paper.

Troubleshooting

Transfer is peeling or lifting at the edges

Increase pressure slightly and re-press for 5–10 seconds with parchment paper.
Make sure the garment was pre-pressed and free of moisture.

Transfer is cracking after washing

The transfer may have been under-pressed. Re-press with firm pressure at the correct temperature.
Always wash inside out in cold water.

Design looks dull or washed out

Avoid high-heat drying — use low heat or air dry.
Do not use fabric softener, which can break down the adhesive over time.

Film won't peel cleanly

Let the transfer cool completely before peeling (cold peel method).
Peel slowly at a low angle rather than pulling straight up.

Transfer didn't stick at all

Check that your heat press temperature is accurate — use a thermometer to verify.
Ensure you are pressing the correct side (printed side down on the garment).

Tips for Best Results

Always pre-wash new garments before applying transfers to remove sizing and residue.
Use a heat press for the most consistent results.
Test on a scrap piece of fabric when trying a new fabric type or heat press.
Store unused transfers flat in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
